Cy Lynch --- “Estimating Growth”---Intermediate
Growth impacts both the quality of a company and the value of its stock. The first question we’ll explore briefly “What is growth exactly?” After seeing how sales growth is the basis for increasing a company’s EPS and ultimately its stock return, we’ll explore specific techniques to improve your projections of future sales and EPS for a company. Then we will use case studies to show how these techniques work in helping you evaluate stocks and manage your stock portfolio.
Kim Butcher --- “Investing With a Checklist” --- Beginner
The SSG tells us a wealth of information about a stock. Why is it that every time you buy a stock the price then seems to go down? You don’t think you overlooked anything in your evaluation, did you miss something? The lowly checklist can help us not overlook items in a stock review that can lead to loss of our hard-earned money! Even Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger use a checklist!
Clair Redmond --- “What A Club Treasurer Needs To Do” -- Intermediate
Clair will demonstrate the on-line version of Club Accounting and the most used functions for monthly reports.
10:15 --- 11:15
Ken Kavula --- “LOOKING FOR NEW SMALL STOCK IDEAS" --- Beginner
Ken will look at several sources of ideas for new stocks to study. He’ll talk about the definition of small stock vs. small-cap stock and lead you, step-by-step, through some of the screening products readily available to BetterInvesting members. Part of the class will be devoted to using screeners in real time and developing a comprehensive list of stocks to study.
Howard Johnson ---“The Front Side of the SSG Using the SSGPlus---Beginners
This class will proceed step by step through the process of completing the front side of the Stock Selection Guide (SSG). It will review the information provided automatically in the data feed and review the reasoning involved in making the judgment decisions required. Suggested boundaries and parameters will also be provided.
Cy Lynch--- “Company Debt”-- Intermediate
Our BetterInvesting stock evaluation and portfolio management tools are based almost entirely on a company’s income and expenses as reflected on its Income Statement. This class will help you take the next step in company evaluation by looking at ways to examine what a company owes (its debt) and how company debt impacts a company’s quality and could impact future profitability and earnings. Cy will define various types of debt and “debt-like” obligations and then examine ways to evaluate debt using financial ratios and things like “interest coverage.”
11:30 - 1:00 Lunch and Lunch Speakers
Speakers will be: Chris Barry from National Retail Properties ; a second one is in the works.
1:15 – 2:15
Cy Lynch ---“Stock Portfolio Management”---Advanced
Stock evaluation is a vital part of successful investing, but it’s just the first step. How well you manage your “team” of stock holdings is what ultimately determines your success. In this class, Cy explains why it’s best to make portfolio management decisions by focusing on the potential impact on your overall portfolio of a decision to buy, hold or sell a stock, rather than just looking at a single stock in isolation. He’ll then use practical examples to demonstrate how this portfolio-centered decision-making methodology can simplify your investment decisions and take emotion out of portfolio management, especially the dreaded decision to sell.
Kim Butcher— “Finding great stocks with the CSC method” -- Intermediate
Have you ever heard of the CSC method for choosing stocks? Charlie Munger has said you only need 3 types of stocks in a portfolio; Carnivore’s, Spinoffs and Copycat stocks. Join Kim on what resources are available for free to find these types of stocks. Cha.ching!
Ken Kavula---“SELLING DISCIPLINES AND SOME NEW TRIGGERS”---Advanced
Starting with a classic review of When to Sell based on BetterInvesting’s tried and true methods, the class will then move to some stimulating new ideas which add to the discipline and which might have the potential to add a percentage or two to your total return. We’ll discuss the meaning of relative return and show how to easily calculate that value using free tools available on the internet. All the while, we’ll be keeping an eye on preserving capital and long-term capital gains. Finally, we’ll also look at selling triggers involving sudden drops in quality as me.
2:30 – 3:30
Ken Kavula --- “MANAGING A PORTFOLIO, THE BETTERINVESTING WAY” --- Advanced
Using the BetterInvesting tools and Manifest Investing tools, Ken will demonstrate an easy straightforward way of managing a personal or club portfolio. Using target values for important measures such as aggregate sales growth and financial stability, Ken will show how to be aware when your portfolio is out of balance. The class will include a look at a few real portfolios from the Atlanta area as well as peek at some real Mid-Michigan portfolios from some of its model clubs.
Kim Butcher---“Understanding ROE and ROIC, what’s hidden in plain sight”---Beginners
Interest rates have gone up and will continue. Are you aware of how a company’s debt will affect ROE? Do you use the ratio ROIC? Capital allocation is a function of management and stock returns are enhanced with great ROIC.
Howard Johnson --- “The Back Side of the SSG Using the SSGPlus Online” ---Beginners
This class will proceed step by step through the process of completing the back side of the Stock Selection Guide (SSG). It will review the information provided automatically in the data feed and review the reasoning involved in making the judgment decisions required.
